• Check the power. Make sure the power cable is firmly in, the power point is switched on and any power board is working. Try a different outlet.

• Unplug extras. Remove USB drives, printers and other accessories, then restart.
• Write down what you see. Note any error message, beeps or the point where it stops. It helps a technician find the fault faster.

Stop if you notice a burning smell, smoke or swelling in a laptop battery. Unplug it and don't keep trying to power it on. Also avoid opening the case if you're not confident, and don't follow random online steps that ask you to delete system files.
