iPhone Data Recovery in Brisbane: Finding Lost Photos and Messages

Lost iPhone photos or messages? Brisbane guide to Recently Deleted, iCloud, computer backups, moving to a new phone and Apple Account access.

Brisbane, QLD

iPhone data recovery for Brisbane homes and businesses usually starts with checking Recently Deleted, iCloud and any Mac or PC backup before anything is erased. Geeks Brisbane does this onsite across Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay and Redlands at $205/hour or remotely at $125/hour, with a one-hour minimum and no call-out fee.

The short version: check Recently Deleted first, then iCloud, then any backup on a Mac or Windows PC. If none of those has your data and the phone won't turn on, getting it back becomes a hardware job for a specialist lab.

Where is my iPhone data?

Your iPhone data can be in up to five places: Recently Deleted, iCloud sync, iCloud Backup, a Mac or PC backup, or an app's own backup such as WhatsApp.

LocationWhat it holdsTime limitHow to check
Recently DeletedPhotos, messages, notesUp to 30 daysPhotos > Utilities > Recently Deleted; Messages > Edit (or Filters) > Recently Deleted; Notes > Folders > Recently Deleted
iCloud syncPhotos, Messages in iCloud, contacts, notesWhile syncing is onSettings > [your name] > iCloud
iCloud BackupApp data, settings, messages if Messages in iCloud is off, and photos only if iCloud Photos is offAs old as the last backup dateSettings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup
Mac/PC backupMost phone data, but not photos or messages already stored in iCloudAs old as the backupFinder or Apple Devices app
WhatsAppChatsAs old as the last chat backupWhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup

How do I recover deleted photos and messages on an iPhone?

iOS holds deleted items for up to 30 days before removing them for good. Check here first.

  • Photos and videos: open Photos, scroll down to Utilities and tap Recently Deleted. Unlock it with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, tap Select, choose the items and tap Recover.
  • Hidden album: open Photos, scroll to Utilities and tap Hidden. Photos moved here don't show in your library.
  • Messages (iOS 16 or later): in the conversation list, tap Edit then Show Recently Deleted. If message filtering is on, tap Filters then Recently Deleted. Select the conversations and tap Recover.
  • Notes: open Notes, go back to Folders and open Recently Deleted.
  • iCloud Drive files: sign in at icloud.com on a computer, open Drive and check Recently Deleted.

If iCloud Photos is on, deleting a photo on one device deletes it everywhere, and after 30 days you'll need a backup, another device or another service that still holds a copy (see the FAQ below for which backups include photos).

Is my iPhone data in iCloud?

Go to Settings, tap your name, then iCloud. This shows which apps sync, such as Photos, Messages in iCloud, Contacts and Notes. Anything syncing here lives in your Apple Account as well as on the phone, so you can see it by signing in at icloud.com on any computer. If Optimise iPhone Storage is on, full-size originals are at icloud.com/photos.

On the same screen, tap iCloud Backup to see when the phone last backed up. Bear in mind that restoring an iCloud backup means erasing the iPhone (Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings) and choosing Restore from iCloud Backup during setup. Don't erase the phone until you've confirmed the backup date covers what you've lost. If you're unsure, stop and call us first. Anything created since that backup will be lost, so copy recent photos off the phone first.

Where else could my iPhone photos and messages be?

  • WhatsApp: WhatsApp chats use their own chat backup (WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup), not the normal iPhone restore. They come back only when you reinstall WhatsApp, verify the same phone number and are signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud Drive turned on.
  • Full iCloud storage: when iCloud storage is full, backups stop. Check Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage Storage, and look at the last backup date before you rely on it. It may be months old.
  • icloud.com Data Recovery: sign in at icloud.com and open Data Recovery to restore deleted iCloud Drive files, contacts and calendars.

How do I restore an iPhone from a Mac or PC backup?

If you've ever plugged your iPhone into a computer and backed it up, that backup may hold what iCloud doesn't.

  1. Turn off Find My first: Settings > your name > Find My > Find My iPhone.
  2. On a Mac: connect the iPhone, open Finder, select the iPhone in the sidebar and, on the General tab, click Restore Backup.
  3. On Windows 10 or 11: use the Apple Devices app from the Microsoft Store (older setups use iTunes). Select the iPhone and choose Restore Backup.
  4. Pick the backup by date and wait for the phone to restart.

Encrypted backups need the password that was set when encryption was turned on. Apple can't recover that password, and without it the backup can't be read. A full restore also replaces everything currently on the phone, so check the backup date carefully before you start.

How do I get my data back from a lost or replaced iPhone?

If the phone is missing, sign in at icloud.com/find to locate it, play a sound or mark it as lost. Don't remove it from your account while you still want to find it.

To move data to a new iPhone:

  • Old phone still working: place it next to the new one and follow Quick Start. It copies your data straight across.
  • Old phone gone: during setup on the new phone, choose to restore from an iCloud backup or from a Mac or PC backup.
  • No backup: sign in with the same Apple Account. Anything that was syncing to iCloud, such as photos and Messages in iCloud, will download over Wi-Fi.

See our new phone setup checklist. Our data backup and transfer service can do the move for you.

What if I can't sign in to my Apple Account?

Apple now calls the Apple ID an Apple Account. Every route above depends on being able to sign in, so sort this out first.

  • Reset the password on another iPhone, iPad or Mac that's already signed in to your account (Settings > your name > Sign-In & Security).
  • Go to iforgot.apple.com in a browser.
  • Use the Apple Support app on a family member's iPhone.
  • If you set up a Recovery Contact or Recovery Key, use it.

If none of those work, Apple's account recovery process takes over. It includes a waiting period that nobody outside Apple can shorten, us included. Be wary of anyone offering to bypass Activation Lock or Apple Account security.

Can you recover data from an iPhone that won't turn on?

Before assuming the worst:

  1. Plug it into a charger and cable you know work, and leave it for a while.
  2. Force restart it (iPhone 8 and later): press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. If it's been wet, switch it off and don't charge it until it's dry.

For a phone that has been in water, see our guide to water-damaged phone data recovery.

If it still won't start and nothing is in iCloud or a computer backup, the data is stuck on that phone. iPhone storage is encrypted and tied to the phone's own chips, so the data can't be read by taking the storage out and putting it in another device. The only way in is to get that phone running again, which means board-level work done by specialist data recovery labs. We don't do board-level repairs, but we can look at what you have and give you a straight answer on whether it's worth sending away.

No lab can promise results, so choose one carefully:

  • Ask whether they do chip-level work on your exact iPhone model.
  • Ask how they charge if no data comes back.
  • If the phone got wet, don't keep trying to power it on. Leave it off and dry.
  • Bring the passcode, because the lab will need it.

Also skip apps that promise to recover deleted data from a working iPhone. Many of these apps only read backups you can already access yourself, using the steps above.

How can Geeks Brisbane help with iPhone data recovery?

Many people don't need a lab. Our data recovery service technicians work onsite or remotely and can:

  • Find and check every backup across your Mac, PC and iCloud, including the backup dates and what each one holds.
  • Recover access to your Apple Account with you, using Apple's own reset and recovery steps.
  • Copy data off a damaged phone through a computer. This only works if the phone unlocks with its passcode and you can approve the computer on the phone's screen.
  • Transfer everything to a new phone.
  • Set up automatic backups so a lost or broken phone costs you a phone, not your photos.

On home visits around Brisbane, the problems we run into include an iCloud that filled up so backups quietly stopped, an Apple Account tied to an old email address nobody can open any more, and the only computer backup sitting on an old family PC in a cupboard.

Not every job ends with the data back, and we say so. This review is from a hard drive job, not an iPhone, but it shows how we handle it when data can't be saved. Boyd wrote: “Very happy with the service. Sadly, my data couldn't be saved as a result of a hard drive crash, but Vinnie determined most of the data was saved in One Drive. He got me going again with a reconfigured drive and new Windows 11. Plenty of helpful advice.”

How do I book iPhone data recovery help in Brisbane?

On a visit, we check the phone, your computers and your iCloud with you, so you can see where your data is and isn't. We come to homes and offices across Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay and Redlands. Have the phone's passcode and your Apple Account details ready, and put aside any old computers or phones that might hold a backup. If you've tried the steps above and still can't find your photos or messages, call 1300 600 004 or book online. Please don't erase or reset the phone before you call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Once photos leave Recently Deleted after 30 days, you need another copy. If iCloud Photos was on, those photos are not in iCloud Backup or a Mac/PC backup, so check another device, a shared album, or a service such as Google Photos or OneDrive. If iCloud Photos was off, an iCloud or computer backup made before you deleted them may still hold them.
If the old phone works, use Quick Start. If it's gone, restore an iCloud backup or a Mac or PC backup during setup. If Messages in iCloud was on, signing in with the same Apple Account brings your messages down over Wi-Fi.
Reset it on another trusted Apple device, at iforgot.apple.com, or through the Apple Support app on a family member's iPhone. If none of those work, Apple's account recovery process applies, and nobody outside Apple can shorten its waiting period.
First try a known-good charger and a force restart. If it stays dead and there's no iCloud or computer backup, the encrypted data can only be reached by getting that phone working again. That's board-level work for a specialist lab, which Geeks Brisbane doesn't do, but we can tell you whether it's worth sending away.
It depends on where your data is. Checking backups and iCloud can usually be started on the first visit. If the phone has to go to a specialist lab, turnaround depends on that lab, so ask them for an estimate before you send it.
Geeks Brisbane charges $205/hour onsite or $125/hour remotely, with a one-hour minimum and no call-out fee. If the phone has to go to a specialist lab, that lab sets its own price, so ask how they charge if no data comes back.
