How to Choose an IT Support Company in Brisbane: 10 Questions to Ask

Choosing an IT support company in Brisbane for your small business? Ten questions on pricing, onboarding, Microsoft 365, security and offboarding.

Choosing an ongoing IT provider is a different decision from booking a one-off repair, so here are ten questions to put to anyone you shortlist.

How do you choose an IT support company in Brisbane?

Choose a company that covers both onsite and remote support, tells you who does the work, and puts hourly rates and minimums in writing. Check that your business, not the provider, holds the Microsoft 365 admin account, and read the contract and exit terms before you sign, including how offboarding works.

This is a checklist rather than a ranked list because the best provider depends on your size, your systems and where your staff work, and a fixed ranking cannot account for that.

Geeks Brisbane provides onsite and remote IT support for small businesses across Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay (up to Caboolture) and the Redlands, with Gold Coast visits at $225/hour. If you are a home user, read our guide to choosing a computer repair service instead.

Where can I find IT support in Brisbane?

Start with a Google search for your area and look at the local pack, the map results that show nearby providers. Read the Google reviews for each one, paying most attention to reviews from other businesses and to how recent they are. Then call two or three and put the ten questions below to each, so you compare the same things.

Geeks Brisbane is one option to test against the others on your list. Our answers are set out below, and our business IT page gives an overview of what we cover.

The 10 questions to ask, and what a good answer looks like

Use these as a script when you call providers. The right-hand column describes what a sound answer sounds like from any company, so you can compare like with like.

#QuestionWhat a good answer looks like
1Do you support us onsite, remotely, or both? Both are offered, and they explain which jobs suit which. Your service area is named clearly, not "all of Queensland".
2Who actually does the work? They say whether work is done by their own staff or subcontracted, and you can find out who will be dealing with you.
3What are your hourly rates, minimums and plan fees?Hourly rates, minimums, call-out fees and plan fees are given up front and in writing, with no vague "it depends".
4What does onboarding involve, and what do you document?A clear list of steps: an inventory of devices and accounts, a review of backups and security, and an agreed start date. Passwords, licences, network details and setup notes are recorded in a system you can access, and you can ask for a copy.
5Who administers our Microsoft 365 and security?Your business owns the tenant and holds a global admin account, and the provider uses its own named admin login, not yours. They cover multi-factor authentication, patching, backups and access reviews, and can describe how these are checked.
6What are your response times? They give response targets, say whether a target means a first reply or a fix, and explain how urgent faults are prioritised.
7What after-hours support is available? They state which hours are covered, whether evenings and weekends are included, how after-hours work is charged, and who you contact when something fails out of hours.
8What happens when a job is out of scope? They tell you before starting and refer you on, or give a separate quote, rather than guessing.
9What are the contract length and exit terms, and how does offboarding work?Contract length, notice period and any minimum term are written down, with no surprise fees to leave. You get your documentation and admin credentials, their remote access tools are removed, and the process is set out before you sign.
10Do we need a plan, or can we start with single jobs? They discuss both honestly and do not push a plan if your needs are light.

How Geeks Brisbane answers

  • Questions 1 and 10: we support onsite and remote, and you can book single jobs or choose a managed plan.
  • Question 3: our rates are $205/hour onsite and $125/hour remote, with a one-hour minimum and no call-out fee. Gold Coast jobs are $225/hour. For a wider look at what Brisbane providers charge and why, see our IT support cost guide.
  • Question 8: we don't do board-level or component repairs. We diagnose the fault and refer you to a repairer who does.
  • Questions 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9: ask us about who does the work, onboarding, Microsoft 365 administration, response times, after-hours cover and exit terms when you discuss a plan. Managed plan prices and inclusions are listed on our business IT support page.

Onsite or remote for Brisbane businesses?

Most software, account and Microsoft 365 issues can be handled remotely, while cabling, printers, network gear and new hardware need someone on site. We offer onsite visits as well as remote support.

Multi-site businesses are a good fit for a mix of both. Remote support is the practical choice when a business has staff or sites spread across Brisbane and the Gold Coast and the issue is software or accounts. Our comparison of remote vs onsite IT support for Brisbane small businesses covers the trade-offs, and our remote support page explains how sessions work.

Microsoft 365 and security: what to check

Admin accounts and security settings are worth checking first, because they are the hardest to recover if someone leaves. Ask who holds the admin accounts, whether multi-factor authentication is switched on for every user, and how leavers are removed. The Essential Eight checklist for small business is a useful yardstick. Our Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace support page covers account administration, and our cyber security services page lists what we help with.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Geeks Brisbane charge for IT support?

Geeks Brisbane charges $205 per hour onsite and $125 per hour remote, with a one-hour minimum and no call-out fee. Gold Coast jobs are $225 per hour. For what other Brisbane providers charge, see our IT support cost guide.

Is remote IT support safe?

It can be, when the provider uses a reputable remote tool, you approve each session, and access is removed afterwards. Ask how sessions are started and ended. We cover this in more detail in our post on remote support safety.

Should a small business use managed IT or pay per job?

Choose a managed plan if your team depends on IT every day, you use Microsoft 365, or you would struggle without your systems for a day. Managed plans typically cover ongoing administration of Microsoft 365, security and backups, so check what each plan includes. Pay per job (often called break-fix) if your needs are occasional, such as projects, fixes or a trial before committing. You can start with single jobs and move to a plan later.
